The Wherry Project, This is a record of an unusual project that I undertook a few years ago. I am fortunate to live on the Norfolk Broads & there is a Wherry Trust close by. Now these Wherries are over 100 years old & still in service. I was asked to cover their 'Gaff Jaws' in leather, not an easy task due to their shape. (Sailors will know what a Gaff Jaw is for the landlubber a look at the e-book will clear this up). Apart from the detailed record & pictures aspiring leather Artisans will get an insight into some of the type of content they can expect to find in my Craft Manuals.
Instructions on making a temporary Stitching Clamp. If you are no good at Wood Work it wont cost much to get it made locally.
Help With Leather Problems
I get inquiries on virtually a daily basis on the subject of defects relating to leathergoos of one sort of the other I have endeavored to answer them all This have involved complex & lengthy answers as no two are alike. It often then develops into an exchange of emails. This can involve a considerable use of my precious time. To deal with this I have produced an e-book on this subject trying to cover every aspect including consumers rights under UK legislation.
A Potted History Of Leather Goods
And an explanation of how the name "Shagreen" originated. Why the vast majority of Leather in use these days is just part of the waste produced by the Worlds populations food chain & if it was not of use it would be incinerated with the rest of the offal that is produced is also explained.
Sewing Machine Needles & Threads Info.
A collection of information & student handouts dating back to the 1980's is included in this e-book & although the main thread manufacturers mentioned no longer exist the needle points & the stitches produced are still relevant. There is also a simple test to check if that thread you got at a give away price will work with the machine needles you have in stock.
A report on a Crocodile Farm based in South Africa where Nile Crocodiles are reared for their meat & skins. The owners have allowed me to reproduce information from their site & I have coupled this with other leather information as well as some of my own past history. The Crocodile Farm is based on a Nature Reserve & is part of the Reserves preservation & control of this unique species as it protects them from illegal poaching As well as protecting other species from the effects of too many Crocodiles. But culling is strictly controlled & a licence is required with every skin sold. There is also a section in the report listing recipes for cooking Crocodile meat.
TLC & MPL Thailand offer Exotic Skins on this Site (Go Here) with the emphasis on Stingray (Shagreen) which is plentiful in the Pacific Ocean & it is one of the main species caught by fishermen in that region & eaten by the local population, much as we eat Cod, Dogfish, etc. And like Dogfish Stingray is a sub species of shark. However Tanners in that area make use of these beautiful skins unlike us in the West who discard our fish skins. Don't recognise the name Dogfish? well it is sold in the UK as Rock Eel. If you want to see the range of colours available from this Tannery download the Colour Charts.
